Janet Long, aged 82, of Rock Island, Illinois, passed away peacefully in her home on July 19, 2026. She was born on August 2, 1943, in Davenport, Iowa, to Andrew and Margaret (Crutchelow) Barr.
Janet lived a fulfilling life marked by her dedication to her family and career. She graduated from Rock Island High School in 1961 and began her long and successful career with Met Life Insurance Company even before graduating. It was there that she met her beloved husband, William, whom she married on September 6, 1974. They shared 49 years of marriage before his passing in 2023. Janet's commitment to her work and colleagues was unmatched, as she continued with Met Life until her retirement in 2005. Even after retiring, she shared her expertise by filling in part-time until 2009.
Janet had a zest for life and cherished the simple joys it offered. She loved Jazzercise and cherished monthly lunches with her dear friends. An avid baker, she made banana bread and Texas sheet cake that were family favorites. Janet enjoyed spending time at the movies with her family, and she took immense pride in her immaculate home, which appeared effortlessly pristine.
Above all, Janet was devoted to her family. She found joy in attending her grandchildren's extracurricular activities, from sports events to plays and musicals, and treasured the moments spent rocking them in her favorite chair. Her sweet nature, joyful spirit, and great sense of humor left lasting impressions on those who knew her. Janet was known for her selflessness and always put others before herself.
Janet was preceded in death by her parents, Andrew and Margaret Barr; her beloved husband, William, who passed away in 2023; her son, Billy; her daughters, Paula and Belinda; her sister, Sandy (James) Murphy; and her daughter-in-law, Joan Murphy.
She is survived by her sons, Darin Davis, Brett Davis, and Daniel Long; her daughter-in-law, Tammy Long; her cherished grandchildren, Alaina (Corry) Norman, Brianna (Ty) Taylor, Chelsea Long, Christine Garver, Ashley Long, Dylan Long, Douglas (Jenny) Garver, and Brandon (Janai) Long; 18 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild; and many nieces and nephews. She will also be dearly missed by her sister-in-law, Cindy Laughead, and brother-in-law, Albert "Bud" Long.
Services to honor Janet's life will be held at Wendt Funeral Home, Moline, IL, with visitation on Friday, July 24, from 4 pm to 7 pm. The funeral service will take place on Saturday, July 25, at 10 am, followed by burial at Moline Memorial Park Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Foundation of America.
Janet's loving presence and unwavering care for others will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
