James Phillips, 79, of Moline, IL, passed away on January 24, 2026, at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center in Peoria, Illinois. Born on May 31, 1946, to Elmo and Mildred Phillips, James lived a life marked by dedication and hard work.
James's career at John Deere spanned an impressive 49 years, primarily doing inspections within the former Plow and Planter group. His commitment to his work was evident, and he retired in 2015, leaving behind a legacy of dedication and professionalism.
An alumnus of Rock Island High School, James graduated in 1964 and carried the values of education and hard work throughout his life. He was known for his easy-going and hardworking personality, traits that endeared him to many.
James was married to Jane Shambaugh in East Moline on May 4, 1973. Their union was filled with love and companionship until her passing on February 20, 2020. Together, they raised a son, Matt Phillips, who resides in Moline. James is also survived by his beloved grandchildren, Candice (Tyler) Dittman of Washington, IL, Michael Phillips, Emily Phillips, Nataleigh Phillips, and Noelle Phillips, all from Florida, as well as a great-grandchild. He is further survived by his brother, John (Janie) Phillips of Taylor Ridge, IL, brothers-in-law, Walt (Kathy) Shambaugh and Bob Shambaugh, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Jane, a sister, Glenna, and a sister-in-law, Nancy Shambaugh.
James had a variety of interests that brought joy to his life; he enjoyed watching television, especially the old westerns featuring John Wayne. His enthusiasm for sports was evident, especially in his unwavering support for the Chicago Cubs, a team that he passionately followed.
A visitation will be held on January 30, 2026, from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM at Wendt Funeral Home, located at 1811 15th Street Place, Moline, IL. The funeral service will take place immediately following the visitation from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM at the same location. His final resting place will be at Memorial Park Cemetery in Moline. Memorials may be made to the Quad City Animal Welfare, Milan, IL.
James Phillips will be remembered fondly by all who knew him as a husband, father, grandfather, and friend. His legacy of love, dedication, and passion for life will always remain in the hearts of his family and those who had the pleasure of knowing him.
