Billy Lee Long, 68, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and devoted family man, passed away peacefully at his home in Moline, IL, on May 4, 2026, after a courageous battle with Lewy Body Dementia. Born on March 29, 1958, in Kewanee, Illinois, Billy dedicated his life to those he cherished most, leaving a lasting impact on all who knew him. He was surrounded by the comfort and love of his family in his final moments, a true testament to the deep bonds he nurtured throughout his life. His presence will be profoundly missed by many.
In 1975, he began his remarkable 50-year career with Jewel-Osco, starting humbly as a bagger. Through perseverance and dedication, he rose to the position of Store Director, a role he embraced with pride until his retirement in 2020. His return to work part-time was a testament to his enduring love for people and the community he served. At Jewel-Osco, Billy was much more than a colleague; he was a mentor to many, leaving a lasting impact and forging lifelong friendships.
Known as a man of few words, Billy’s speech carried great meaning when he chose to share his thoughts. His kindness and willingness to help others were hallmarks of his character. A loving and romantic soul, he instilled deep family values in his children and grandchildren, nurturing a close-knit family that treasured every moment together. He especially cherished attending his grandchildren’s events and extracurricular activities, which brought immense joy into his life.
Billy’s personality was complemented by a rich array of interests. He had a profound love for nature, delighting in tending to his flowers and caring for the wildlife that visited his yard. His enjoyment of the outdoors extended to camping, fishing, and walking. He also loved traveling with his wife and family, creating lifelong memories on vacations to Colorado, South Carolina, and many other states. He enjoyed golfing and bowling, proudly achieving both a hole-in-one and a perfect 300 game. His passion for classic rock music, tie-dye fashion, and support for the Cardinals, Illini, and Steelers reflected a vibrant, spirited side that those close to him cherished.
Billy was a devoted husband to his loving wife, Tammy, who stood by his side through every chapter. Meeting in 1975 at Jewel-Osco, their union was sealed on April 22, 1978 and was the cornerstone of a life filled with love and partnership. Alongside Tammy, Billy’s legacy continues through his children—Alaina (Corry) Norman, Brianna (Ty) Taylor, Chelsea Long, and Dylan Long—and his treasured grandchildren: Ivy, Atticus, Javon, Lilith, Eden, Faith, Samual, Joshua, Leonardo, Roselynn, Sierra, Hayden, as well as one great-granddaughter, Chloe-Joy. He was also a loving son to his bonus mother, Janet Long, and a cherished brother to Daniel Long, Darin Davis, Brett Davis, and Tracy Hagen. Billy's large extended family circle will carry forward his spirit.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William Long and Beverly (James) Lee, bonus father, Daniel Lee, his sisters Paula Long and Linda Garver, and his sister-in-law Joan Murphy.
The family invites all who knew Billy to honor his memory with a visitation on May 9, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Wendt Funeral Home, located at 1811 15th Street Place, Moline, Illinois.
